Woman Knocks Over Old Man, Refuses to Apologize Because of ‘Special Status’

Woman Knocks Over Old Man, Refuses to Apologize Because of ‘Special Status’
Apr 11, 2014 By eChinacities.com

On April tenth, Xiao Mingming shared a story on Weibo about a crazy incident that happened between her and a staff member of the high court.

The blogger was taking her child to get a vaccine when she got into a dispute over a parking spot. Xiao Ming’s father got out of the car to save her spot when a Mercedes drove up. After a brief stand off the Mercedes refused to back down and just drove into the old man.

When Xiao Ming beeped her horn in protest, the door opened and a long haired woman ran out of the car and started kicking and punching her car, trying to pull the door open to attack Xiao Ming and terrifying her child.

Xiao Ming called the police and when they arrived, the woman pulled out her ID card to show that she worked at one of the highest courts in China and told them that they shouldn’t dare make trouble for her. However, it didn’t work on the police and they tried to insist on her apologizing, which she did, but only in English which we all know doesn’t count.

The whole time the woman repeatedly threatened the policemen saying she had ‘special status’ and she would sue them.

Netizens later investigated and found out that she worked for one of Beijing’s highest courts.

Surely you are joking right? She defended her authority to run old people over and that is what keeps China harmonious? Nah, you MUST be joking.

having a position of authority should mean that you behave in a manner worthy of respect. Respect is not something that you automatically get, it has to be earned. How can you respect anyone who believes someone who thinks it is ok to run over people ?

I have a comment. It seems our readers have small vocabularies and cannot express themselves without using obscene expressions. The woman's behavior was unforgivable. But, do the comments above reflect a level of "us and them" perspective? What separates our readers from this offending woman may be the same thing that separates her from "common" people.

It depends on how highly you value good diction and politeness. If it extentds to the point that valid counterarguments are unwelcome and amusing jokes become inappropriate, I strongly disagree. If you have some experience with online discussions, you'll find the above comments to be fairly mild and reasonably insightful. And if you live in China, "us vs. them" is all you hear about. So, allow the foreignlanders some leeway to turn it around sarcastically. OK, it won't change the minds of any Chinese, but we don't expect to (English is a *less* real language to Chinese, as the court employee's apology demonstrated). Chinese have their fun staring at us like zoo animals on the streets; let us have our laugh at their expense on an English website.

Hi Mead --- What separates us from that woman is that we don't have public tantrums, attack other people's cars with our fists, or drive into old men. --- Your objection to people expressing contempt towards her seems to be solely based on the vocabulary they use, not the fact that they are expressing contempt. --- Saying "her behaviour was unforgivable" has the SAME objective meaning as calling her a "stupid bitch". --- It seems to be the word "bitch" you object to, not the act of judging people. --- Are you a Christian?

Even as a Christian I will still call her a bitch.

I have to agree with coineineagh and samsara; what separates us from people like this women is that I would never run over an old man and say that I am too important for it to matter. The US is full of jerks of course, but I mean even the most clueless jersey shore-style narcissist who hit an old man would probably try a tack of "He ran in front of me! It's not my fault!" rather than "Oh he's poor it doesn't matter that I ran him over...why are you all looking at me like that?" This isn't a situation where saying we can't judge another culture is inappropriate; WE ARE BETTER THAN HER. That is an objectively truth.

You guys all know why she apologized in English right? It's sort of like a double back-hand apology. Firstly, she apologizes in English because English is like a language to them that isn't 100% real or kind of like a buffer. It like paying bills with monopoly money or telling her assistant to apologize but she won't. Secondly, she would use English to try and belittle those around her, sort of like... look I can speak English and you can't obviously I am more important than you. China... are these your leaders?

This is merely the tip of the iceberg. The whole place is drowning in a sea of corruption. What I find suspect in the story is that the police demonstrated some scruples.
