Student’s Passion for Instant Noodles Gets Him Into Elite American University

Student’s Passion for Instant Noodles Gets Him Into Elite American University
Apr 04, 2014 By eChinacities.com

A delighted student who got into one of America’s best universities posted his admissions letter on Weibo, and this is the part that caught people’s attention:

“The counselors recommended that you be admitted in part after reading about your enthusiasm for Ramen noodles. The committee and I are confident you will both stand out and grow stronger as part of the Rochester family.”

The admissions letter was sent to Fuzhou student Wang from Rochester University, ranked number 32 in the whole of North America.

The student explained that eating instant noodles was his all time favorite hobby. It began with a fateful trip to Singapore when he tried their instant noodles and was completely blown away by how delicious they were.

From then on his enthusiasm for instant noodles only grew, and he wanted to try any instant noodles he could get his hands on. He has tried almost every brand from every region in Asia.

When applying to study abroad he noticed the ‘Hobbies and Interests’ section of the application form so naturally he wrote about his number one passion. He never expected the admissions board to pay attention to it, let alone consider it as a deciding factor in his application.

What a stretch. Elite American university? Nope. Because of his love of instant noodles? That's not why he was admitted. Journalism at its best. Tricked into reading something based on a crazy title.

If I expound on my love of t-bone steaks, will I gain admission to an elite Chinese university?

Don't think so Bill. Perhaps you may need to show how profoundly inspired you were with the cultural aspects of the local citizenry and the impact it has on your life such that you were inevitably drawn to join in the exemplary study methodology that creates a uniquely superior race.

Good story, but Rochester is not an elite American university.

it's not what you write about, it's how you do it. isn't Ramen a Japanese term?

This is encouraging. Hopefully, other students wanting to make it into international universities will realize that even the simplest of topics can make a difference in their applications. Of course, the personal essay is but one of the many factors (a healthy bank account really helps) that colleges consider for admittance. However, a well-constructed essay, coupled with some sincerity and creativity, and of "being who you are," will undoubtedly be in your favor. I've seen the work of several students before and their initial work usually ended up being re-hashed work from the internet, filled with "SAT" words. Hopefully, this will encourage other students to explore, and be proud of, their individual creativity and not what they have copied or memorized.

Well, I read it as him trying to think out of the box, which is good. Not anything outstanding but at least we get someone who's not trying to lie his way through to get admitted by saying how hard he will study (by rote), how he will promote the uni (by comparing how China unis are better) and how he will use his knowledge to spread the goodness of this uni (by telling everyone he's an overseas grad). So, this is something fresh. Hope we get more creativity from overseas grads and/or wannabes.

After reading this, many Chinese students will show their individuality by copying his essay.
