Marks and Spencer to Open New Stores in Beijing and Guangzhou

British retail giant Marks and Spencer will be expanding its China influence with new flagship stores opening in Beijing and Guangzhou. The company will also continue to work with online shopping platforms such as T mall in an effort to increase brand recognition and overcome some of the obstacles it previously encountered when entering the mainland market.

The first mainland flagship store which opened in Nanjing Road, Shanghai in 2008 encountered problems due to high prices, lack of interest in the products (too western for Chinese, too Chinese for Westerners) customs blocks and even bad fengshui.

The company now operates 15 stores on the Chinese mainland most of which are around Shanghai and the Yangtze river delta.
