The Chinese Chain Store and Franchise Association recently released their list of the 26 first and second tier cities and how they rank in terms of their convenience stores. The four categories monitored were growth rate, opening hours, saturation and policy support. The sum of these parts gives each city a convenience store index. The nation’s capital, Beijing, ranked 25th out of the 26 cities listed.
The top three were made up of Shenzhen, Dongguan and Taiyuan respectively. Shanghai came in sixth and Guangzhou found a spot at ninth. The report also found that cities on the coast generally had a higher index than those inland, and southern cities fared better than northern cities overall. Shanghai was the only city that displayed a negative growth rate, but that could merely be a reflection of the tightening of policies in the city regarding convenience stores.

Living in Beijing, I find the convenience store situattion very convenient. If Beijing is ranked 25th of 26, I do wonder how amazing these "southern convenience stores" can be. I've been to dozens of cities in China, including many places in the south (Wuhan, Chengdu, Fuzhou, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou etc.) and have not noticed any significant differences.
