China Crackdown on Prostitution: Hundreds Arrested in Latest Sweep in Guangdong
Mar 26, 2014 By eChinacities.com

Police in Guangdong Province have arrested 62 gangs and hundreds of individuals, in the latest crackdown on prostitution in China. The raid was followed by a highly publicized CCTV report that exposed the underground sex work scene in the city of Dongguan back in February.

The news was announced at a press conference held by the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Department on March 25. According to reports, 2,925 establishments were ordered to shut down and 62 sex trade gangs were bust during the raid. A further 865 individuals suspected of involvement in the illegal sex trade were also arrested.

The former deputy mayor and Dongguan police chief Yan Xiaokang, was removed from his post due to his failure to tackle “vice” in Dongguan despite the fact that a CCTV report drew attention to the matter earlier in the year. A further 36 police officers are also being investigated for their negligence in the matter.
