One helpful Netizen in China’s Northern region, who endured the high levels of air pollution along with the rest of us, posted a before and after picture of the face mask he wore over the past four days.
The man said that he wore the same mask for four days and was outside, exposed to the haze for only an hour and a half every day. The picture shows how the mask has changed color from the white it comes in, to an off-gray color. Not a nice thought for those of us without masks. Hope our lungs aren’t an off-gray color today.

I decide not to wear a mask, even though I wouldn't deny there are health benefits to doing so. It's not a matter of "not getting it". I just feel it is patronizing to other people to be a foreigner in a country - in the case of most expats, choosing to live here voluntarily - and send the signal to the locals that their air is not safe to breathe. Because if I was a local I would think, if this foreigner has such a problem with the air, why doesn't he just go back to his pristine country, which shamelessly exports pollution to China by way of corporate exploitation of the Chinese worker.

People laugh when I wear these. They ask if I have trouble breathing, medical problems. They don't get it.
