From February 13 You Can Swipe Your Phone to Enter Shanghai Metro Stations
Feb 14, 2014 By eChinacities.com

As of February 13 you can now use your phone to swipe into Shanghai’s metro system. It is a great initiative though seems to involve a lot of ‘mafan.’ Our advice, don’t cut up your current metro card just yet.

Firstly, only certain phones can be used, as in those that are NFC-enabled. Some of the brands that have this function are Samsung, Sony and Huawei among others. Secondly, you will need to register your phone for this service. To do this you need to go to any China Mobile outlet and get an NFC-activated sim card (you can do this and keep your number). Then you need to go to a Shanghai Pudong Development Bank branch and open an account with them. Once you have this you need to download their ‘mobile wallet’ app on your phone and connect your new bank card to the app. And voila, you’re ready to travel the undergrounds of Shanghai using only your phone.
