Local Businesses in Guangxi Town Raise 1 Million for Basketball Tournament

February 11 saw five basketball teams converge in Jinxiu Yao autonomous region, Guangxi for a basketball tournament. The five teams featured a wide range of stars, some players had played in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), but there were also a few who had played NBA ball.

The tournament was entirely funded by five local businesses who wanted to attract attention to their products and their city. In total the enterprises provided up to 1 million RMB to the project. The tournament was such a hit with the towns folk that an hour before the first game started the Muzhen Basketball Complex, the venue for the tournament, was completely packed.

One of the investors said oft the tournament, “This will not only allow people to watch an exciting basketball game, but our enterprises can improve visibility.” What a great initiative for the people of Jinxiu Yao and the local businesses alike.

It should lose the "National" aspect once it expanded its scope of play to outside the USA. But it can't change, due to how closely the brand recognition is tied to the NBA abbreviation. FIBA is largely unknown in China, even among BB enthusiasts.

NBA is a name (proper noun). The name of an organization does not change with perspective.

Technically, NBA should be called IBA when the play outside the States. But I think Chinese are so familiar with the term, that they wouldn't recognize what IBA meant, even if you translated it to them. But if you shout "NBA", their eyes will light up with admiration.
