On February 6, photos were uploaded onto Weibo showing the slapped face of a 6 year old boy and the woman who slapped him. The boy had been running around the baggage carousel of Shanghai’s Pudong Airport when he caught the ire of a middle-aged foreign woman (nationality not specified) who then slapped him in an attempt to make him stop.

The official Weibo account of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau Released a statement on February 7 announcing that the woman has incurred a 500 RMB fine and been sentenced to 10 days administrative detention. You can discipline your own child all you like, but never discipline someone else’s.

A friend of mind paid 5000rmb for kissing a a Chinese girl in the public after being severely beating by a group of Chinese guys accusing of using force on the girl by some jealous unknown guys who hates to see a foreigner with a Chinese girl. He was taking to the police and asked to pay 5000rmb to the girl for destroying her image publicly. And what's funny is that the girl had no say in the matter.

I remember one of my first experiences in China my first 6 weeks in Shanghai. I went to meet a graphic designer to get some illustrations made. Although at the time the going rate for this type of illustration was 40-80 rmb, this guy wanted over 300 rmb because I was a "rich foreigner". At that point I turned to my Chinese friend who was helping me communicate and said that was "fu___ing ridiculous. The guy then called the police on me. Thirty minutes later I'm being put in a police car and taken to the police department. About an hour later someone, an official from a special department that deals with foreigners (i cant remember the name of the dept.) comes. As soon as she enters the room she starts yelling at me and telling me that I'm in China and I must obey China law. Again and again. She had not even asked me one question about what happened. Not even one. she had no idea what happened. I was a foreigner so I was wrong. Three hours later I finally get released after demanding over and over for them to tell me if saying the F word is against the law in China. Eventually they let me go and did not say once apology at all. Chinese people have absolutely no respect for foreigners. We all have countless stories just like this one. You're not chinese.... so you're wrong.

i think a bigger crime is to not teach your child the difference between right and wrong. a 6 second sting from a slap compared to a life time of misery wondering why no one likes you or takes you seriously.

He probably was a little shit, might have even knocked her down or something. But you can't slap someone else's kid. I don't care who did it, if someone slapped my kid I'd kill them. A lot of Chinese kids are horrible and lack proper parenting, but you can't slap a 6 year old. I love how all this crap makes the news as well. I saw a man kicking his own son on the subway. In fact I've seen quite a few people kicking their own children. Apparently that's ok in China and doesn't make the news.

as this incident took place in an airport, i imagine there would be CCTV footage of it, to confirm one way or the other what happened. Why has this not been mentioned?

Very good point. If it really was a barely provoked attack, they'd have some juicy images to show on the evening news. But it just looks strange if the elderly lady was just knocked over by a baggage trolley.

As reported in Global Times. A foreigner who slapped a 6-year-old boy at a Shanghai airport luggage carousel has been detained for 10 days and fined 500 yuan ($82.45), police said Friday. The woman slapped the boy after he accidentally hit her with a luggage cart, the Pudong International Airport branch of the Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau announced through its Sina Weibo account on Friday. A female witness posted an account on Weibo saying the woman, who spoke French, at first denied slapping the boy to a crowd of about 30 people who had gathered to criticize her. After admitting her behavior, she tried to solve the problem with 50 yuan but the boy's family refused the money. They called the police. The witness said the boy, a native of Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, the woman and herself had all just flown from Sri Lanka to Shanghai, arriving about noon on Thursday at Pudong International Airport. She posted one photograph of a middle-aged foreign woman and another showing the boy's face red after slapping. A person who assaults a person younger than 14 must be detained no fewer than 10 days and no longer than 15 days, according to the Law on Penalties for Administration of Public Security implemented in 2006. The assailant must also pay a fine between 500-1,000 yuan The woman, who lives in China, is unemployed, a Pudong airport police officer told the Global Times on Friday. He asked not to be named and refused to release any further details.

I've had Chinese gits messing around, kicking my stuff (as I've carried them), never laid my hands on them but a good shout, worst is when their parents/grand parents are minimizing their actions and defending them gits, at that point I give the parents a few words of advice

Check out the book entitled 'The Slap', written by Christos Tsiolkas. It's also been made into an 8 part mini series. I haven't read it, or seen it, but I want to.

I've been living in China for 5 years, I noticed most of the Chinese children are mentally sick and behave impolitely and they are spoiled by their parent. the parents don't care when they see their child behave badly , instead they just allow him/her to do what they want . so I don't see any hope in this country , lack of behaving and education

In many instances, articles here would say "a foreigner (unspecified nationality). It's getting really annoying. But about this news, oh well, what's new? They always blame the "foreigners". In terms of child discipline? I've seen many children being "disciplined" at school by someone else but parents, and damn it breaks my heart when they do it the "non-foreign" way.

You know you can't do anything right in China and it is jus your fault. I call the Police cause big car hit me on crossing..... Driver got real mad cause I put a dent in it by punching it when I done got hit it, to say to stop.... Took only a measly 3 hours to get a outcome... But you gotta know that if you a foreign boy, china massa gonna do what they gonna do to get they good way..... Oh China massa is good just so long as we do good...... .... Also a slap can never knock out a tooth and Chinese parents are totally shit with their no care, complete bullshit attitude to everyone else around them.... Actually many parents around the world seem to be this way now. Slap a kid when they are being a dick already. Confucius says to for gods sake

She slapped the boy without first trying to confront the parents? The boy did nothing but run around excitedly? It must be annoying how we foreigners think about news reports like this; it would be much more convenient if we just swallowed the tripe. As always, I'm certain the details of the story were altered to the point that it seems like a random, barely provoked attack. If anyone has some real details about what happened, please post it here.

http://www.shanghaidaily.com/Metro/society/Foreigner-detained-for-slapping-boy-at-airport/shdaily.shtml this one says she knocked his tooth out with a SLAP! yeah, right. unsubstantiated accusation i assume. unless the old lady is a professional boxer. http://english.people.com.cn/90882/8530432.html this one also admits that the boy 'scraped against her', so there was some contact involved. http://www.scmp.com/news/china/article/1422896/foreigner-detained-slapping-chinese-boy-shanghai-airport HERE WE GO: the "totally innocent" boy "accidentally" puched a baggage trolley into her. He got slapped for being a racist little pipsqueak attacking the elderly lady with a large object, and the Chinese newsmedia is all over it. This country is hopeless. Poor little innocent victims can't even assault elderly foreigners when they feel like it. I'm sure the little emperor will be hailed as a hero.

I love the way you're so judgemental about the Chinese while complaining that the Chinese are too judgemental about foreigners. It comes down to the simple fact that she is an adult and the other party is 6 years old. Even if the child deliberately ran a trolley into her (and nothing says that's what happened) she has no business slapping a 6 year old child. If this had happened in the UK, she'd almost certainly have faced assault charges. I'd say that she got off pretty lightly if she only got a 500RMB fine and 10 days in jail.

chinese parents see no reason to intervene when their kid's harrassing a foreigner, because it doesn't cause them to lose face. if you ever taught young children, you'd know this. you can't compare it to western parents.

And yet you address absolutely nothing I said. Even the story you found says it was an accident that the kid bumped into the foreigner. There's nothing that says the kid was harassing the lady, most likely the kid was playing the trolley, (You know, like kids do) and accidentally hit her. She responded like a child instead of an adult by hitting him back. Yet you are so judgemental about the Chinese that you are going to supply your own narrative about what happened based on absolutely no facts whatsoever. Which is ridiculous considering that you started by complaining about how judgemental the Chinese are.

i guess i could provide examples of the media deliberately misinforming the public about events to service their own narrative, but it won't disprove the fact that i'm making assumptions of my own. so, you are right: i have no proof. i guess we should trust news stories word for word. is that what you are saying? i'm just using common sense that she wouldn't have slapped him if it was accidental. maybe i'mwrong, and she's just insane. do you also believe she knocked out his tooth with the slap? and why do 3 of the news stories completely omit the presence of the baggage trolley in the incident? i always think about things carefully before passing judgement with my feelings. is that a bad habit? we won't know what truly happened that day -all i know is that the news stories give conflicting/illogical reports, and i'mcriticiing the media for that.
