Chinese Woman Can’t Divorce American Husband Until She Finds Him

Chinese Woman Can’t Divorce American Husband Until She Finds Him
Jan 17, 2014 By eChinacities.com

In 2007 Miss Zhang from Jilin met John, an American living and working in China. They fell in love and decided to tie the knot. A month after the wedding John told Miss Zhang that he had to go back to the US to sort out a few personal matters. While he was there they kept in contact over phone and email but Miss Zhang began to worry. By 2009 they had lost all contact with each other and even her attempts to contact him through his family and friends bore no fruits.

In 2010 Miss Zhang received a court summons from the US stating that John wanted a divorce. Not understanding the American legal system she did not respond to the summons. Once in 2012 and once in 2013 she herself tried to divorce John through the Chinese judicial system but because she can’t provide an address for her ‘husband’, the process cannot be completed.

The case is currently under investigation but it seems as though the pair are destined to be legal bound for eternity, or at least until someone finds out where the hell John is.

The strange thing is John wouldn't need a divorce in the U.S because he didn't marry her in the U.S, this story is false.

The story sounds like complete bollocks. Don't discount the possibility that it is entirely fabricated. There are provisions within Chinese law for divorce on the grounds of abandonment. You've always gotta take stories coming out of news.sina.com (as with many Chinese news outlets)as fluffy entertainment pieces.

this story is not in accordance with what is written in Chinese procedure law or family law. a Chinese national may divorce a foreign national without the foreigner's input or acknowledgement since 2001. an address is required. further, a Chinese national may divorce anyone after a separation period of 2 years without that person's input, acknowledgement or presence (no address requirement). this woman qualifies both routes. therefor, the tale behind this article must contain several holes and unspoken details.

most chicks here in China thinks marrying a man from the west is a upgrading for them and passport to the west. Ignoring the guys is fat, old and bald ...lol

of course it's an upgrade. I've seen more rich, fat, old Chinese men with a woman half their age. If she gets married to a man from the west, at least she can escape the pollution. I don't blame people for wanting to leave this shit hole. marriage is an economic decision, has been so for centuries. marrying for "love" is a recent phenomenon. If you don't believe me, then look at the number one reason people get a divorce. Financial.

Its funny story all together, an individual thinks marrying a man from the west is worth and this should serve as a warning to the rest who could have fallen in the same trap. Chicks take care.

This could be a made up story for locals to point to and say, "don't marry a foreigner." If it is true it actually says more about the silly Chinese bureaucracy. We do not know what their marriage was like. We only have one side of the story.

Not made up I think, but it serves the Chinese media's narrative. A cautionary tale for any "unpatriotic traitors" who betray their countrymen by marrying a man from another country. It angers locals because of the self-inflicted imbalance of the men/women ration, and the ridiculous cultural hysteria about marriage and childbearing. In reality, the American probably got his divorce in her absence. She shouldn't have ignored the court summons; it was her mistake. "I didn't know." is a child's defense - she knew full well that ignoring the summons would be obstructive. And now she's disappointed that she's the one who suffers. In fact, she was lucky to get a summons at all. If the Chinese marriage was not registered in the USA, then the man would remain unmarried by American law.

One of my good friends told me she could have put any address down. Also she could have put his last known address or the address of his family member (remember she was in touch with them). Again, this is a bogus story (in that she can divorce him very easily).

What a coward... man up and divorce her properly. You don't need to break her heart and ruin her life.
