Australian Detained in Fuzhou on Suspicion of Illegal Employment
Jan 14, 2014 By eChinacities.com

On January 8, an Australian man was held by police in Fuzhou and given a fine after he was caught having opened an English school illegally. He had set up the “school” in an apartment and all that was inside were a few desks, a whiteboard and some simple teaching equipment, including a computer.

The man taught primary school children and most of his students were referrals from other parents and acquaintances. He hadn’t dealt with any of the formalities of opening a school and had no qualifications.

I have seen thousands of these places opened by Chinese all over the place. The police wouldn't care about this unless someone told on him. Most likely some "legit" nearby English center with Chinese owners that were losing business to his school.

What's wrong with a legally legitimate business reporting a competitor who is operating illegally?

Did you notice the quotations marks? Many of them are not legitimate but actually just have connections or bribe the local government. So it is very hypocritical from my point of view. There is possibly ONE illegally foreign run school for every 3000 Chinese illegally run schools.
