American Teacher Drives Beijing Taxi For the Day

American Teacher Drives Beijing Taxi For the Day
Dec 06, 2013 By eChinacities.com

Dressed smartly with a bottle of hot water, Matthew got in his taxi ready for a hard day of work, but instead of getting in the back he jumped into the drivers seat and began his day as a Beijing taxi driver, all fares for free.

This expedition was all part of the British Council’s “Dare to Speak” campaign which encourages Chinese students as well as the wider citizenry to practise their English.

Now did he really embrace all that Beijing taxi driver life is?  Did he smoke more than a pack of cigarettes? Did he refuse passengers because it was nearly going home time? Did he know one completely random fact about every country or province that his passengers came from?

British Council hiring an American teacher to drive a taxi? ...to supposedly let the Chinese practice their English skills? Sorry, I don't buy it...it's another one of those crazy "kiss ass" things foreign countries do...wonder how far "Matthew" had to go before getting wrecked from a Chinese driver?

I wish I can see a handsome taxi driver as him anywhere here, polite and sweet... not as Chinese taxi drivers are....

I got in a taxi the other day, and the driver couldn't change my 100 note. He accepted the 2yuan change I had and my apology instead. I'd say China is the one place where I've actually met a nice taxi driver!

The real news here is that for one day, there was actually a competent driver on the streets of Beijing.
