“I love spring rolls, I love wontons….I love Chinese food, don’t cheat me! I love rice, I love fried noodles…” These are the lyrics to the latest tune blowing up on the internet. Upon hearing it was made by Patrice Wilson, the man behind Rebecca Black’s monstrosity “Friday”, we watched it immediately and then very much wanted to burn down the internet so as not to live in fear of ever seeing it again.
The video has attracted much controversy, and not just because the song itself is “musical mediocrity,” but also for its overuse of Asian stereotypes, some not even related to China, like the Japanese Geisha for example.
Wilson denied intentions of racism with this, “Yes, I know geishas are Japanese, but you can find Chinese restaurants in Japan! People say I’m squinting, well okay, I have small eyes. All this controversy, I didn’t even think about it. The pissed off people saying I’m racist, the last person who wants to be racist is me.”
Oh, just hush.
