You know those old fisherman tales that always bemoan “the one that got away”? Well, now we know where these mysterious fish end up – upon a plate served at a restaurant in Dalang County in Dongguan, Guangdong Province!

On the afternoon of November 9, 2013, a giant grouper fish weighing 341.5 kg and measuring 2.65 meters long was on display in front of the aforementioned restaurant. Citizens passing by could hardly believe their eyes!

The average lifespan of a grouper fish is over 20 years and the average weight is around 0.75 kg. This “miracle” fish is estimated to have lived an amazing 30 years and would have likely lived longer if it wasn’t caught and then served in a Guangdong restaurant.

Miss Lin, the buyer of the fish, reveals this “whale of a tale” was caught almost a week ago on November 7th in the Spratly Islands. Fresh with enthusiasm over the catch, Miss Lin said, "The first Guinness World Record was 281.5 kg in Shanghai, followed by a 591.5 kg one caught in the Bocca Tigris (in the Pearl River Delta of Guangdong. We were not able to apply for a Guinness World Record; however, our grouper weighs 341.5 kg – a fish that can certainly be called the 'Fish King of all Fish Kings'."
