Two foreign students are in critical condition after a man struck them on the head with a hammer in Baoshan District in Shanghai at 12:45 on November 8. The attack occurred while the students – one from Indonesia, 22 and the other from France, 20 – were walking down Shengda Road near Shanghai University.

A passersby called the police and an ambulance after finding the women lying on the ground with bloody head wounds. Within ten minutes of the attack, authorities tracked down and arrested the suspect; a man surnamed Hu from Anhui Province. It is reported that the attack was random and that he was venting his anger about an unrelated argument with someone else.

The women are currently being treated in Tongji University Hospital and are still in severely critical conditions. The case is currently under investigation.
