"Police have identified Monday's incident at Tiananmen Square as a violent terrorist attack which was carefully planned, organized and premeditated," police said.

After an on-site investigation the police found gasoline, machetes, iron bars and a flag with “extremist religious content”. The three people in the jeep have been identified as a Uyghur man named Usmen Hasan, his wife Gulkiz Gini and his mother Kuwanhan Reyim. It is suspected that all three died after lighting the gasoline.

Police added that, with the help of the Xinjiang police force, just 10 hours after the attack five people have been detained in connection with what happened. From their names it appears they are all Uyghur.

The attack occurred on Tuesday October 28 when a jeep drove into a crowd of tourists and police officers and then burst into flames. In addition to the deaths of the three occupants, two tourists were killed; a man from Guangdong province and a woman from the Philippines.

Security in Xinjiang Province appears to have increased since the attack.
