A pig trotter restaurant in Henan has hung banners demanding the restitution of debts incurred by the local Wangluo township government that add up to a total of 700,000 RMB.

Located in Xiangcheng County, city of Xucheng, the Geng Weijie Simmer-Fried Pig Trotter Restaurant have hung banners six to seven meters long that publicize the local government debt and say, "The Secretary for Wangluo township still owes me 700,000 RMB" and "After coming here for three years, Secretary Han Junhong owes me 700,000 RMB."

Owner Geng Weijie asserts that the debt is true by saying to the press, "I'll stake my reputation on it!" Geng produced two IOU's issued by the government from the years of 2011 and 2012 for a grand total of 574,876 RMB, and another for around 80 K. The notes are undated but bears the seal of the financial affairs department of the Xiangcheng local government.

Having calculated the average cost of the three-year debt to an average daily cost of 639 RMB, one netizen remarked, "That's quite an appetite!" while another said, "I want to see what this secretary looks like."

The local Wangluo government confirms the debt, saying it is "the cost of treating guests for the previous two years", and has already dispatched someone to communicate with the owner and to quickly solve the situation.

When asked if 200,000 RMB a year for food expense is reasonable, spokesperson Zhao for the local government answered, "Yes, that should be a reasonable limit."

I love this guy and I'm glad to hear the BBC is spreading the news, thanks tomcatflyer. I hope they will do a follow-up when the restaurant is burnt down and the owner imprisoned.

I am currently in the UK for a while and just read this while having the radio on. Five minutes later it is being reported on the BBC So these officials who think they can scam anyone and no-one will are having their "fame" spread worldwide. Another little example showing the rest of the world what some of China is really like.
