Most of us have heard about the shanzhai phenomenon in China, you know the one where they copy phones, luxury items, food products and even whole villages. But it’s not limited to just those. Oh no, nothing escapes the shanzhai wizards in China, not even gas stations!

Recently, a shanzhai gas station was discovered on the S307 highway between Luzhou and Yibin in Sichuan Province. From the outside, the China National Petroleum Corporation (中国石油) gas station looked just like any other one. However, upon closer inspection its name actually reads Zhongwei Shiyou (中围石油). One would be forgiven for not spotting this little character discrepancy because other than that every detail looks just like the real thing, from the four pumps to the red price signs to the logo.

After the photo was uploaded online, netizens who had previously filled their cars at the station expressed surprise that they hadn’t spotted the deceptive name. And there you have it: the shanzhai phenomenon in China has no limits and it’s easy to overlook. We just wonder if the gas itself was shanzhai too.
