Hundreds of Villagers in Henan Loot Ancient Coins from Site; Officials Don’t Care

Recently, locals discovered hundreds of ancient coins in a construction site and when word got out, hundreds more flooded in to dig out the ancient treasures. In some cases, entire families descended upon the site to dig up as many of the coins as possible.

According to a villager, people have been digging up the coins since early August. The discovery was made after villagers dug up the area for a construction project. The earth from the pit was shoveled into a big heap on the side which became a big attraction for the local kids. After playing the dirt, some kids found the coins in its midst. The coins were then sold off for 190 RMB per 500 grams and each day people in pedicabs would come to take away the goods. Some people apparently even brought metal detectors along with them and managed to unearth several kilos of coins per day.

According to a journalist at the site, many of the coins come from the Northern Song Dynasty with some dating back to the years 1017-1021. Despite looting coins for over a month, not one official from the cultural relics management department has come to oversee the findings. With a large amount of coins guaranteed to “disappear” and more and more treasure-seekers coming to the site and digging even deeper, many are concerned that the site poses a safety threat. However to date, not one single official has commented on the matter.

Ah yes, the Henanese. Not exactly known for their honesty are they ? Every CCTV soapie out there has the low-life villain character portrayed as a Henanese.
