I knew Bo Xilai while living in Chongqing. I liked him. I had no idea, if the charges are true, that he was involved in such things. I guess I was very naive during our friendship. I am embarrassed.

Every government worker from the lowliest farmington jerkwater secretary to Chairman Xi dip their hand in the till. That's just the way business is done in China; it doesn't necessarily make them bad people--they do what they have to do to get by (the official salary of most officials is 6,000 RMB a month). I can certainly say that for everything wrong with Bo Xilai, he dreamed of a safer, cleaner China and he made it happen in Chongqing. Did he take bribes and use organized crime connections to clean up the city? Absolutely. But I will be the first to say, he's only standing trial because he's Chairman Xi's political enemy. Just like Glaxo Smith Kline which happens to be run by a powerful and outspoken pro-democracy family got audited for corrupt practices that go on every day in this country. Bo Xilai is not Robin Hood. He's not some saint. But his political record shows he really cared about this country and wanted to see it change for the better. Ten years from now his name will be mentioned in the same breath as Lin Biao and Liu Shaoqi.
