The following story, though dark and sinister, proves that instincts should not be ignored. It was the fact that this father acted on his feelings, that the story had a happy ending.

Mr. Cao and his wife, both from Henan, moved to Shanxi Province to work. Both lived in special workers dorms. This summer their 13-year old daughter, who had stayed behind in Hebei, decided to come to Shanxi to visit her parents. She too stayed at the workers dorm.

August 9 started out as any other day: Mr. and Mrs. Cao both took off for work in the morning leaving their daughter alone in the dorm. However, that day at work, Mr. Cao began to get an uneasy feeling about his daughter. The more he continued with his work, the more anxious he became. Finally, unable to shake off the anxiety, he ditched his work and ran back to the dorm. There, he witnessed every parent’s nightmare: a man stripping off his daughter’s clothes about to rape her.  

When Mr. Cao screamed the man quickly put his clothes back on and attempted to flee, only to be blocked by Cao who pinned him to the ground and called the police. The assailant was a 26 year old man from Gansu with a history of theft. It later emerged that he had been eyeing up the daughter for some time and finally saw an opportunity that day when the parents left for work. He is currently in custody facing charges of attempted rape.
