Desperate Man Robs Bank in Beijing to Pay for House Down Payment

On August 6, a man named Li Ming stood trial at the Chaoyang Court in Beijing for unsuccessfully robbing a bank. The reason he resorted to such a desperate measure to obtain money? Li was short 170,000 RMB for the first down payment of his house and was unable to come up with the cash through legitimate means.

The 32-year old from Zhuozhou in Hebei Province, graduated from a university in Beijing in 2005 and eventually landed a job working at a tech firm. But in September 2009, Li quit his 5000 RMB a month job and a month later met his girlfriend. In order to impress her, he lied about his situation and convinced her that he worked as a manager in an IT firm and made over 10,000 RMB a month. Not suspecting that he was lying, she fell for the lie.

Then, this year in February, Li decided to buy a second-hand house in Fengtai District to cement his relationship with his girlfriend. Li managed to scrape together 140,000 and the girlfriend contributed 100,000, but he was still short 170,000 RMB to make the first down payment. Friends were unwilling to help him out and he didn’t have the guts to tell his girlfriend the truth. And so, not seeing any other option, Li decided to rob a bank.

After doing some research, Li decided to rob a bank in Chaoyang District. After hovering around the bank for a couple of hours, Li finally saw his opportunity at 17:00 when workers begun to lock up for the day. He went up to the locked door and starting calling out to workers inside, and eventually one person opened the door. He told the worker that he’d forgotten his bank card inside so the worker closed the door and went back into the bank to look for it. When the worker came back and re-opened the door, Li pulled out his knife and stormed in. With his knife in one hand, Li demanded 300,000 RMB. Eventually, two workers and a security guard at the back of the bank managed to restrain him.

The court in Chaoyang District has since sentenced Li to 10-12 years in prison and he hasn’t seen his “girlfriend” since the incident happened. Not surprisingly, Li regrets the whole thing and has said that it wasn’t worth it. You don’t say!
