Too Much Money + Careless Planning = A Concrete Aircraft Carrier in Shandong

China’s obsession with superlatives has already resulted in the world’s biggest building, an attempt to build to world’s tallest skyscraper, and even the world’s biggest rotating dinner table! Authorities in Binzhou, Shandong Province were clearly also thinking big when they approved plans to build an aircraft-carrier-shaped building out of concrete back in 2005.

Named “Zhonghai Aircraft Carrier”, the 260 meter long building managed to secure 120 million RMB in investment and was to become an almost identical replica of the American USS Enterprise navy aircraft carrier. When it opened in 2005, Zhonghai – which functioned as a hotel, dining, recreation and entertainment center – became a tourist attraction in the area and even hosted a couple of large-scale events between the years 2005-2008.

But the building has since been abandoned and is now littered with broken bottles, cigarette butts and rubbish. So what happened to a site that was once heralded as a must-see attraction in Binzhou?

Apparently, business was not as hot as hoped and businesses in the aircraft carrier began to pull out. One by one, the aircraft carrier/hotel/entertainment center became a ghost town. “Lack of planning” was also thrown in as one of the reasons for the project’s failure but at least the public are left with an interesting eyesore site for taking wedding photos!

careless planning (squared)+ too much money=your average Chinese enterprise. Not that I think they care what Westerners think--but I seem to recall a popular Western saying about people who need to make/have the biggest things...

I love reading about any county that has a vanity project gone wrong. Who remembers the 'Dome' in London ? Seriously, there is nothing more obscene that such a waste of money in the name of self-aggrandisement.
