Exposed: 70% of Plastic Wrap in Supermarkets Contains Toxic Plasticizer

During a CCTV report on July 28, it was discovered that, after performing tests, 15 out of 16 samples of plastic film used by supermarkets to wrap meat and vegetables contained bis (2-ethylhexyl) or “DEHA”, which is a toxic plasticizer.

CCTV reported that the highest samples of DEHA found in the plastic film were 472 times the detectable level of 0.05 percent. The report also stated that, due to its low price, DEHA was present in around 60-70% of all plastic film used in foods in various supermarkets. The tests were done with plastic film from supermarkets in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, though it has not been confirmed which supermarkets were involved.

Food safety expert Dong Jinshi confirmed that DEHA can affect the human endocrine and reproductive systems, and can cause early maturity in females and sterility in males. Dong advised shoppers to go with polyethylene (PE) wrap as opposed to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) wrap to be safe.
