Think Taxi Refusals are Annoying? Check Out These Poor Guys…

Being refused a taxi ride is one of the more frustrating aspects of living in China, especially when you’ve been standing out in the freezing cold or the pouring rain at 4am for ages.

On July 25, a Wuhan couple experienced an extreme case of reluctant cabbies however, being refused a ride home by over ten drivers. As a result they had to wait over an hour in the scorching sun to get home.

The wife had just given birth – three days ago in fact – and was released from hospital at around 10:00 with the baby in her arms. Her joy was dented by a series of taxi drivers who seemed to be worried about the consequences of picking up a newborn and a recuperating mother. As the angry husband moved up and down the road to try and hail cab after cab, he was met with either fleeting drive-aways or drivers who spotted his wife and stated, “I don’t take women who have just given birth.” Madness.

So what gives? Well, after quizzing a few Wuhan taxi drivers, a reporter learned that despite most of them having no issue with giving such women a ride, some cited that they feared bad luck, according to some crazy superstition or whatever.

After the story made the news, the Wuhan traffic authorities ensured people that if they encountered taxis refusing to take women who had just given birth, they could report the vehicle’s licence plate. But what about all us poor sods stuck out in the rain at 4am?

Maybe the Chinese couple should have known of such superstitious behavior and planned accordingly ?! (The mother and infant hiding while the father hails the cab. Once he is in, he calls for her). Duh ?!
