“I’ve Looked After Her for 28 Years”: Man Refuses to Further Help Elderly Mother

Oh dear. It seems the geniuses behind China’s latest filial piety law won’t be very happy.

A man from Nanning recently declared his desire to cut off all ties with his elderly mother, as he believes that he has “done his duty” after looking after her for 28 years.

The 85-year-old mother, surnamed Chen, has four children and has been abandoned in a hospital for the past half a year, with none of her kids showing up to take her home to be looked after. Chen had reportedly been staying in the hospital to recover from an illness, though now is well enough to be taken home.

On July 15, police got in touch with one of her sons, Wang Yi (alias), who upon being told of his mother’s situation, refused to help her. Wang also lives together with his three sisters, who he emphasized are all too busy to look after the poor woman.

The cost of Chen’s medication is reportedly a few thousand RMB a month, though Wang made it clear that as her mother brought him up for 18 years and he had looked after her for 28, he wasn’t interested in doing anything more. Wang furthered his case by stating, “I don’t have the resources to look after her, and medicine fees are endless. I can’t even look after myself. If I take her home, I’ll just be waiting for her to die.”

Mrs Chen later told a journalist that she blames herself for not educating her son properly, and even feels she has let down the country by burdening the hospital with her presence.

Currently, Chen remains in the hospital eagerly awaiting news regarding her desired homecoming.

What kind of society has to pass a law forcing people to take care of their parents? What happened to love for even just one's fellow human? Confucius says when the family unit is broken, it indicates that all levels of society are immoral and broken. Though I disagree with a lot of his opinions, I think he's onto something there..

The problem in China is the goverment first of all. If a people is ill here , he must pay the hospital even if he has a medical insurance ! If no money, the people die ! In my country hospitals do even surgeries to someone who has even no insurance, no money and my country economy is down, not as China ! It is a shame for China this ! Here are rich peoples anywhere, but they are not pay tax for their goods in the way to make also older peoples to survive here ! This old woman, arrived to blame herself for what ??? He was doing nothing wrong and her words really are heartbreaking ! Her sons are unable to earn some money to pay her medication, well, this can be true in China where if you have only a High school degree, you can't earn more than 1500 macimum 2000 rmb /month. If the mother has no job at her younger age, this is also a problem as now she has no retirement money to receiving, but this is not only her case, there are so many women like her ( for different reasons maybe has no job in their lifes) , but in this case, is she has a husband, she should receive some money from his side ( even he dies, she should receiving retirement money from his side, a procent maybe, not 100%, but something there ! ). At least she was born 4 kids, 4 older peoples now who are working for China now ! Yes, education is something she may missed to give to her sons correctly, but depend of the people's character and posibilities also further, for nothing a parent give good education to a child if the chil d will have no posibility to take care of her later. There are many cases like this. Nothing to blame anyone ! At least, in China should exist homes for elderly peoples , for those who are in this situations and the goverment should take care of them.
