Old Man Run Over by 4 Cars; 1 Driver Stays to Call Police; Pays Huge Compensation
Jul 17, 2013 By eChinacities.com

During the evening of October 10 2011, a hideously unlucky 60 year-old man was fatally hit by four cars on Chengdu’s Longhua Lu in the city’s Longquanyi District. However, the first three cars that hit did as many drivers do these days in China – they simply drove away. The fourth car decided to do the moral thing and call the police. However, following the incident the family of the deceased demanded compensation from him since he was the only one of the drivers left at the scene.

The hearing begun back 2012 but only recently reached a conclusion: Peng, the driver of the fourth car involved in the incident, stated that before he ran over the old man he noticed that his legs were still moving. As the old man died on the day, the court saw Peng’s recollection as the direct cause of the man’s death, and ordered Peng to pay 400,000 RMB to the family.

In a twist to the tale however, Peng has been reassured that if the three drivers who fled the scene are caught, he has the right to claim his money back from the court.

Yeah, how many cameras are there in China? millions, every road has a load, so why not just check CCTV footage of nearby junctions?. This just reinforces chinese view that its better to do nothing than to help.Shame on the courts. If someone is killed, their body will still be twitching even though they are dead, so seeing the guys leg move doesnt mean he was alive. Also why wasnt the guy using a crossing point? if he was hit by 4 cars then he was on a busy road, I am sure they were trying to teach people in Beijing that J-walking is illegal and give them fines. perhaps they should just publicizes some cases where someone was killed and the driver stopped but was let off as the pedestrian was breaking traffic rules / laws and caused his own death. Other wise when we are short on cash we could just wait for a cop car to come along and jump in front of it for a quick payday.

cops have special license plates so it wouldn't work. Also cops don't care about the law. I was on a crossing and cut off and hit by a car. I waved the police over that were looking but they don't care. They were in their nice aircon cooled car and fair enough, doing your job is a real hassle when it is hot outside.... cctv may be there but probably not turned on. That would be to logical. There is also that rule that the bigger you are the more likely you are going to be in trouble. Crash your bike into a car. Person in the car will have to pay.

The lesson for all in this story is, DON'T DO THE RIGHT THING. Is it any wonder people don't stop.
