Culture Clash? German Hotel Warns Guests About Behavior of Chinese
Jul 11, 2013 By eChinacities.com

On July 9, an article appeared in German newspaper Der Spiegel which saw a travel editor report about warnings he received from a hotel regarding the behavior of Chinese people.

Upon checking in to a hotel in Munich, he was told that between the hours of 6:30-7:30 the next morning, there would be a large tour group of Chinese tourists in the restaurant of the hotel who may make a lot of noise while eating.

The article went on to say that the hotel advised other guests to try their best not to get riled up by the potential burping and slurping noises that the Chinese guests might make, as it’s just “Chinese culture”. Furthermore, guests were advised to come and eat breakfast after 8:00 if they wanted to enjoy a quiet meal.

A hotel employee reportedly told the writer that if they didn’t give out the warnings, they’d receive a lot of complaints from other guests.

Predictably, the article has caused hot debate on the web forum of Der Spiegel, with hundreds of netizens expressing their viewpoints regarding the dilemma.

What do you think? Is this the acceptance of “cultural” nuances or is it bending over too far to accommodate Chinese guests?

Well, in my country (in Central Europe) German tourists are regarded as VERY loud. They always talk louder than the natives and it is especially evident on public transportation. If one doesn't like it one can get off. Similarly, if you are enering a room with people who behave the way you don't like it just leave (and pick a different time to come back if you need to). Different cultures have different norms and habits. One is not beter than the other. While I understand the hotel's concern I think it goes over the top. If you stay in a hotel you will encounter people from other places, if you don't like that stay at home.

Chinese are terrible tourists, in general. That's it really. I have had many arguments with Chinese who try and defend the indefensible. I point out many tangible examples even. Chinese are not international people. Also, sorry, but, just as we have to put up with stuff here because we are in their country, when they are in ours, they should lose their horrid Chinese habits. TBF, they are not the only ones - there are good and bad in all, but, for a number of reasons, they are perceived as being the worst.

All very true - particularly the "Chinese who try and defend the indefensible.". Been there myself. Say anything negative about any aspect of China, Chinese people, or their culture, and you get their instinctive "China is great!" reaction. Excessive patriotism kicks in and reasonable thought is nowhere to be found.

"Is this the acceptance of “cultural” nuances or is it bending over too far to accommodate Chinese guests?". Most companies will take the view you can never bend too far to accept MONEY. If they're paying guests it will of course continue.

Even back home, I avoid certain places at certain times of day. Sometimes to avoid noisy kids, other times to avoid queues of dawdling pensioners. No difference.

haha Many hotels face this "Chinese culture" and many guests are unhappy. I also prefer to avoid such groups.
