Brave Journalist Uncovers Beijing Urology Hospital Diagnosis Scams
Jul 04, 2013 By eChinacities.com

Following a series of recent hospital scares regarding the misdiagnosing of diseases, a 27 year-old journalist from local Beijing rag BJ News recently went down to some hospitals to do some investigative work.

The journalist hit up Beijing’s Tongji Hospital on June 19, and after performing a health examination hospital Director Mr Peng declared that a part of the reporter’s body was inflamed. Despite the reporter urging that they were unnecessary, doctors insisted that further checks such as a blood test and ultrasound were needed, which would have racked up a bill of 561 RMB. After some negotiation however, both sides agreed that some routine checks were all that was needed and the reporter only paid 161 RMB.

However when it came to the rectal examination, the reporter saw that no disinfectant and lubricant was being used, and the following procedure proved to be, you guessed it, pretty painful.

On June 20, the same reporter paid a visit to Beijing’s Shuguang and Ditan hospitals, who told him different stories: Shuguang said he had prostatitis, and Ditan told him he had a venereal disease. Finally, the journalist visited two more hospitals: Tongren Hospital and the China-Japan Friendship Hospital (yes there is such a thing), who told him that he had nothing to worry about.

Upon explaining his findings to the hospitals which misdiagnosed him, some accepted their mistake and agreed to refund his hospital fees. However some refused to pay him back and claimed that the hospitals who said he was fine didn’t perform detailed enough examinations.

Investigative journalism award of the month perhaps?

Hospitals are a joke here. Doctors are incompetent. And most people just do what the doctor says without question. Question the doctor and they yell at you immediately here. Opiates stop my heart. I am allergic to them. For a cluster headache, a doctor tried to pump morphine into me. When they tried, I took the needle and threw it across the room. They called the police and said I assault them. Luckily my wife was there and explained. The doctors didn't believe my allergy because "no one is China is allergic to this medicine." Go in for a headache, come out in a box.

for a long time my wife had bad migraine attacks and we visited one hospital after the next - always with different diagnosis without any deeper examination. Always released after some dropping against the pain. nobody felt responsable, no doctor took care - until we visited an international one. it cost 10 times the average of the chinese, but the doctor took much care, found a diagnosis and therapy and my wife had no bad migraine attack for nearly a year! *fingers-crossed* So, goodbye, Chinese health system.

well if did a little research you wouldn't have had to go a gazillion hospitals.Migraines don't have any neurological symptoms(but they are a classified as a neurological disease). They are vascular headaches which have some general and some particular physiological triggers(vary person to person) a simple aspirin/ibuprofen/diclofenac sodium or paracetamol could have taken care of it and the only therapy is to avoid the known triggers.....that being said yes the chinese health system does suck!!!!
