Can Baijiu be a Success in the West? Chinese Distillers Seem to Think So

That’s right, Chinese distillers are planning to break every expats’ favorite sweet-tasting, refreshing spirit baijiu into the Western liquor market.

A lucrative business in China—1 billion liters were imbibed in 2012—baijiu distillers in China are confident that the drink can find success in countries where alcohol consumers don’t already obliterate their insides on a daily basis. “Baijiu hasn’t been marketed to the West yet, but I think it could be. People are interested in China and here’s a piece of Chinese culture that can go right to your dinner table,” said James Rice, Managing Director of baijiu marketer Sichuan Swellfun.

While those keen to export it to the West admit that it has an acquired taste (to say the least), they believe there is some hope that baijiu can be successfully marketed to the West if certain adjustments to its taste are made. “Tequila has as very unusual flavor, but through clever marketing and good cocktails, it has earned a place on the bar shelf. I see no reason why the world’s most popular spirit can’t do the same,” explained Derek Sandhaus, an expert on the industry.

I always thought they could make good sales to the homeless/frat guy market. You can buy 5 liters for 8 kuai! How else can you get "should I take him to the hospital now?“ smashed for a $1.50?
