Zhuang Zhuang is one of the many dogs who keep guard at a factory in Luoyang’s Industrial Zone. However, during the afternoon of April 28, Zhuang Zhuang injured his leg when he was taking a jump. He was then taken to the nearest animal hospital for treatment by a few factory workers.

After being treated for several days, vets informed the factory that his leg injury was incurable, and that he had to be put down. After discussing the matter with the factory bosses, it was decided that Zhuang Zhuang would be laid to rest peacefully on the morning of May 2.

Later than day however, factory guard Chen spotted Zhuang Zhuang just outside the entrance to the plant. Chen recalled, “I thought that someone had changed their mind about putting him down and then brought him back. I then realized that he had somehow found his own way back.” Chen saw that Zhuang Zhuang’s body had injection marks, and then realized that the euthanasia operation had already taken place. “When I saw him I cried,” continued Chen, “I also had no idea how this dog, who had never even left the factory grounds, had managed to find his way home from a place 12km away. He must have been in so much pain too.” After seeing Zhuang Zhuang, Chen ran over and gave him some bread and water.     

Later, vets explained that they had first injected Zhuang Zhaung with a euthanasia drug, however found that it had no effect. Afterwards, vets then injected Zhuang Zhuang with anesthetic hoping it would do the trick. When the vets returned, they realized Zhuang Zhuang was gone. The animal hospital later refunded the factory with the medical fees.
