According to a New York Times article published on May12, a growing number of children from wealthy Chinese families are choosing to attend private high schools in New York City to increase their chances of acceptance into US universities and to gain special skills that Chinese schools do not teach.

In China, these students are known as the “fuerdai” generation, or “second generation rich”. Their parents are mainly estate magnates, shipping giants, luxury hotel owners and doctors from cities along China’s east coast.

One popular school for rich Chinese is the Léman Manhattan Preparatory School whose annual tuition fee costs $68,000 a year for boarders. According to the article, most of the 27 enrolled Chinese students live a residential tower on Wall Street above a Tiffany & Company store and spend their spare time shopping at Bergdorf Goodman and indulging in meals that cost up to $295 a pop.

I feel pity towards the Chinese who feel the need to outsource their education system instead of actually improving what is here.
