CCTV’s Use of Jon Stewart Clip to Attack US Backfires Horribly

We all remember when the People’s Daily fell for the Onion’s prank when they named Kim Jong-un the sexiest man alive? Well it seems that China’s media institutions are yet to fathom satire, as CCTV were recently seen using a clip from Jon Stewart’s Daily Show to attack Barack Obama’s repeated pledges to shut down Guantanamo Bay.

The news piece entitled “Limbo Update” showed Stewart poking fun at Obama after the US President made yet another promise on April 30 to shutdown the detention center. Netizens (many of which are familiar with Jon Stewart after a previous video went viral in April) were soon to respond with condemning comments at the apparent low-brow attempt to show up the US, with many stating that CCTV was being hypocritical. “There are so many problems happening domestically that you choose not to broadcast everyday…but instead smell the farts of other countries,” said one netizen.

At last, the saving grace with this one is that at least China’s netizens have an understanding of irony and sarcasm even if their news networks don’t. “They just want to divert our attention to other problems…tainted milk, gutter oil, undrinkable tap water…we are so lucky,” mocked another netizen.
