Foreigner in Ningbo Gets 10 Years in Prison for Ivory Smuggling
May 03, 2013 By eChinacities.com

Wrongdoing foreigners have been all over the news this week. This time round, it’s Guinean citizen Barry Seydoux, who has been sentenced to 10 years and six months in prison for the smuggling of endangered animal products. Seydoux’s personal assets of 300,000 RMB have also been confiscated by the police, as have all his other smuggled animal items. It was also reported that Seydoux has already been deported.

His collection included 1,226 pieces of ivory weighing nearly 60kg—an amount that was said to be worth around 2.5 million RMB. Also among the items were elephant skulls, hippo tusks, and products made from python and crocodile skin. All the items found were said to be made from endangered animals. Most of the items were said to have been smuggled in during the Shanghai Expo in 2010, with Seydoux transporting them under the guise of “African crafts” as he moved them from Guinea to China.

At the end of 2010, Seydoux attempted to smuggle a second batch of goods into China, though was caught by the Ningbo customs.

There is a huge market in China for these stuffs. What is being done about it? Chinese people tend to favour endangered animals prroducts as a sign of prosperity. What happens when the animal is extinct? What good did that do to them to possess any animal items? Was their lives that miserable without it before? Does the need to show off exceed compassion towards other living things on our planet by that far?? As for the smuggler... well he didn't get punishment severe enough. How about being given equal penalty as for human murder?? That would be reasonable enough.

First point.. look how few replies this article received in 5 days.. sad isn't it that it draws not much attention in this country (except that a foreigner was charged and not who he was selling it to?) ...Hmmm Second point.. I couldn't tell you how many times I have been pushed away from taking photos at the "pet" or "animal" market here in Guangzhou.. I have personally witnessed lots of exotic animals and coral (from protected coral reefs for aquariums)in the open market with police standing nearby. when i walk up they show to sell (for food or chinese medicine or whatever) until they see my camera then they panic..Hmmm Like the documentary I saw on the owner of a tiger park selling Tiger Bone Wine in China...Hmmm If it was panda they will sure change the tune quickly. Just my opinion
