Taxi Drivers Scamming Passengers at Beijing Capital Airport

Taxi Drivers Scamming Passengers at Beijing Capital Airport
May 03, 2013 By eChinacities.com

In recent days, a growing number of reports have emerged of arriving passengers at Beijing Capital Internationals Airport’s Terminal 1 being taken advantage of in the taxi waiting area— taxi drivers refusing to use the meter, haggling over the fare price with potential customers, rigging their in-dash printers with fake invoices etc. To avoid detection, many of these drivers are intentionally obstructing their license plate numbers.

According to several passenger accounts, their drivers refused to use the meter although they were offered “more acceptable” fare prices if they were willing to carpool with other passengers. For example, if several passengers carpooled from the airport to Chongwenmen, each would have to pay 150-200 RMB. However, if it were charged according to the meter, this fare should only cost about 100 RMB.

Local taxi companies have responded that they will carry out their own investigations, and if something is found to be true, the driver will be punished (usually meaning fired). Meanwhile, if a passenger encounters such “cheating” with a cab drive, they are instructed to call 96123 (the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport) to file a complaint.
