On March 13, Italian company HSD Europe signed an agreement with representatives of the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission to begin the sale of their “Sanispira” nasal filter, which filters out PM 2.5 and PM 10 particles as well as fine dust and pollen. HSD Europe will initially provide a batch of 120,000 filters which will be made available to traffic police, sanitation workers, and other people who are often directly exposed to Beijing’s pollution. If successful, HSD Europe will sell the nasal filters to all members of the public for 1 RMB a piece.

Alienated

This is a great idea but can anyone tell us how effective they are in reducing the actual toxic contaminants of Beijing air that are less than .5 micron in size (dixoins for example). Coal dust is 1-3 microns. So if this cool gadget only stops .5 micron and above fore example, we will still be ingesting carcinogens in the winter months. And according to bloomberg article, it is better to smoke a pack of cigarettes a day than to breath Beijing winter air.
