It comes down to culture. It is hard to break down those life-learned, centuries-old barriers. I am assuming that this article is written for training center teachers. When you have a public school class with 40-80 kids, many of these ideas fail. The number one tip I would provide here is Practice, Practice, Practice. This should be through all the elements of English skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening). A controlled flood of English is required. Another tip for teachers, especially in large class sizes, is that you can not help those who refuse to be helped. That is not to say that you give up on them, but focus on those who show you that English is important to them. Those that are struggling, continue providing encouragement. One final tip is to try to identify how particular students learn. Not all students learn through textbooks and listening to teachers. Hands-on projects, video resources, and non-traditional forms of learning should be used as a balanced mixture to try to reach as many kids as possible. It is always sad for any devoted teacher to see students getting left behind. Unless the school and the administrators are willing to find additional help for these students, you too may feel like you are drowning alone in the sea of English teaching. Accept the casualties if the students insist on being victims. Help those that you can. It is a cruel sentiment for sure, but we can not help those who refuse to help themselves.
