Maybe simply because it's true!?! I have no idea myself, having never been there, but if graham has, then maybe he knows...?

I find this Chinese reaction to any criticism with direct, obvious facts really puzzling - I often hear 'why you have to say (like) that'? Why instead don't you take the point, believe it, or check it, understand, and then CHANGE?

e.g. If you don't want to be told off for being late, come on time!
If you don't want to be criticized for being rude, don't be rude!

If you don't want to be reprimanded for pushing on the subway, don't do it!
If you don't want to 'lose face', be more considerate to others.
If you think China is 100% wonderful - the cleanest, most hygienic, best place on Earth, then you must be a) blind b) deluded and c) under the thumb of the Party.
Learn some manners, and some words for 'Excuse me' and stop spitting (etc) in the street; then everything will be more HARMONIOUS - geddit?
